GoPro Max review: Much more than a 360 camera

gopro max

Press the Mode button to turn the camera on! Second, it has a full-color 1. Slide the switch and pull to open the door, and this is where you insert the battery and memory card. Max TimeWarp lets you capture stabilized time lapse videos while you move about a scene. GoPro knows this, and honestly, I don't think the company is really trying to change that. If there was a negative, it's that you have less control over how wide your shot is. There's something about how it handles leans and turns and other anatomical movements that seems a bit more natural -- and it doesn't appear to be cropping like the Hero 8. The battery then slides in so the contact points touch. Not a huge problem, but a minor annoyance clipping it back on. The additional microphones also provide a surplus of audio information that can be used to cancel out background noise and hone in on voices or other desirable sounds. With Max, leveling is done right on the camera and in real-time. Max Time and space Warp TimeWarp was new to GoPro for the Hero 7. Boost on the Hero 8 is weirdly smooth, as I noted in my review and is therefore not well suited to all activities, in my opinion. In a video I took from a pier facing the Boston harbor, you can see impressive clarity and coverage. We would like to gather more details on the green screen issue so we can help you best with the troubleshooting process. Here you can set the voice control language and wake with voice settings. Not really sure on the marks they keep making about fragmented hardware. These might be less razzle-dazzle than a 180-degree rotating pan, but they're much more important to a lot of general users. With the Hero 8, GoPro made it better by using the camera's sensors to automatically adjust the speed of the video. If you provide any comments, suggestions or other feedback to GoPro with respect to the Software, you hereby grant GoPro a non-exclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free license to use any such feedback for any business purpose of GoPro. You can record video, take photos and even set up a Facebook live stream hands-free from the GoPro Max. If the Software and Documentation are being acquired by or on behalf of the U. It's billed as a more immersive view that squeezes every pixel from the 4:3 sensor into the more common 16:9 format. If you have a creative or experimental mind, Max is going to feed your curious side for sure. In Hero mode, TimeWarp works the same as in the Hero 8. If you primarily want to use Max as a regular action camera with some 360 capture perks, then you'll need to think long and hard about whether you need 4K, slow motion or any of the night modes. Plus, the editing opportunities of the companion app are awesome. But the real question is: is the Max good enough to be a one-stop-shop for all your action camera needs? And yes, you can choose which camera to use front or back via an on-screen toggle. While Hero mode instantly makes the Max more practical and versatile, know that there are some limitations. With a phone, you can pan as much or as little as you'd like. Note that the Hero 8 has four different tiers of stability off, on, HyperSmooth 2. That's to say, you can zoom in, pan around with transitions, rotate the camera to any angle and so on. Wrap up I was pretty excited when I first heard about Max. Without Horizon Leveling enabled, the camera wobbled to a dizzying extent, but with Horizon Leveling, the far-off edge of the grassland remained stationary. Either way, horizon leveling to the rescue? Once you mount it and tighten the pin, you can nudge the camera a little off-axis so it's no longer flat in the mount. Choose from a range of resolutions 5. With Hero mode on the Max, you simply press a button on the screen, and it'll shoot regular non-360 video, photos or TimeWarps. In a demo, I saw the effect in action — strapped to a cheetah. Its unbelievable that they would release this product without the software completed. On the Max, there's a new battery door, which normally I wouldn't mention, but this one kept popping off if I opened it too enthusiastically. Once again, there are two lenses and neither is protected by a glass cover -- unlike the Hero line. The app uses keyframes, which you add to the timeline and then move the camera around to what you want to be in the shot. First of all, it's smaller, by about half an inch on its two longest sides. I found this a little easier to work with, although it does mean that you'll need to transfer files to the desktop, which adds another link in the chain. What's more, with a Hero 8, any leveling comes at the expense of some image crop, as the app is basically zooming in a little to prevent black edges as the image rotates. Add to this the fact that you have to treat the camera more gently thanks to those two exposed lenses, and again, it might not fit your use case. In the guide below we show you how to set up your GoPro Max for the first time, from choosing the right memory card to navigating the best settings and preferences. TimeWarps can easily be ruined by having the camera pointing slightly off-center as you walk. I imagine a snowboarder pulling a corkscrew, yet the horizon doesn't move, only the rider does. Your copy of the Software is licensed, not sold. Ambisonics audio option is disabled. GoPro's Max doesn't slay all of these problems, but it gently persuades you to forget about some of them. The Max also has the bonus of full 360-degree TimeWarp shooting which allows you to capture absolutely everything happening around you and output it as a 360-degree video, or as a reframed 2D video where you choose what is in shot. The main problem with it on the Hero 8, is that the feature is hidden away in the app which also means you have to use the app. Power Pano We've all tried to take a panorama with our phones. To swap to Hero mode, or standard video or still, tap this icon and the view will swap to a standard aspect ratio from one of the two lenses. To power off the Max, tap the power button icon in the top right corner of the app preview screen. The Fusion had the mounting fingers built-in too, but now they fold neatly into the base of the camera. You know how it goes, you try and slowly move the camera from one side to the other while staying within the lines, yet somehow you're shaking like a leaf and have lost all sense of hand-eye coordination. In fact, in 360 mode, you can edit a TimeWarp in the same way you can edit a 360 video. We appreciate your feedback and patience as our team works diligently to enhance and improve our Windows Exporter. Your continued use of the Software after such notice will indicate your consent to any such changes. In practice, this makes the Max a much less daunting, much smaller and cheaper proposition. Hero mode Perhaps the simplest difference between Fusion and Max, is that the Max can be used as a regular GoPro right out of the box. I can really see some people pulling out mindblowing shots from this that simply are not possible on a regular sports camera. Secondly, the app reports to finish the rendered clips but anything over 30 seconds is a blanked out with a green screen. It's clever, dynamic and a lot of fun. Wrangling 360 files was hard, viewing them in any meaningful way was even harder. Unfortunately, the limited 2D shooting modes are still a long way off competing with single lens action cameras. Audio One of the features GoPro was keen to highlight at Max's launch was the spherical audio. If this copy of the Software is an upgrade from an earlier version of the Software, it is provided to you on a license exchange basis. So your environment and a few other variables might be a factor here. TimeWarp is here, and so is regular TimeLapse, but there's no night lapse or any of the night modes at all. And there's no hard limit like there is on a Hero. For most people in the market for an action camera, I'd point you to the Hero 8, but for those who want to add a little creative flair, Max is a beast potentially worth taming. To facilitate product support, product development and improvement as well as other services to you and other GoPro customers, you agree that GoPro may collect certain information about your use of the Software as described in our Privacy Policy. You won't want to use it all the time, as it's definitely situation-specific, but it's another feather in the utility cap for Max that you won't find on the Hero line. When the app is connected to the Max's Wi-Fi, it functions as a remote control for the camera. Stitch lines are mostly gone, but pop up sometimes. You can choose your speed increase rate 10x, 5x and so on , or let the camera figure it out for you. It was fun, worked pretty well, and that was that. With Max, that's no longer a problem. Pictures stitch automatically in 360-degree mode, too. Of course, this is still a GoPro, so action and adventure are at its heart. These are all things that are begging to be experimented with. These setups require video encoding and decoding support for spherical media that need to be tested across multiple devices. It works for simple transitions and pans etc, but it can still be a bit of a pain to keep things level, or worse, avoid overdoing the funky effects like tiny planet, or rotating the view too much of this soon gets distracting. It also bumps up the spherical resolution to 5. They're not totally gone, though. Max SuperView is about 26-degrees wider again than on a regular GoPro and tops out at 149-degrees field of view. Basic edits can be done via your phone without too much headache. The first is something we saw debut in the Hero 8: built-in, foldable mounting fingers. Upon your download, installation and use of this copy of the Software, the license granted to you for the earlier version of the Software will automatically terminate, with or without notice from GoPro, and you will promptly destroy or return to GoPro all copies of the earlier version of the Software in your possession or control. Barrel-rolling videos just because you can? You can see in a minor break where my hand is in this 360-degree shot I took in Bryant Park, but it still looks great. Though my hands shivered in the brisk late-October air, the Max HyperSmooth setting stabilized my shot pretty well. Now, you can move the view of your TimeWarp around over time like you were moving your head as you walk after the fact. It's not egregious, but it can be annoying if you don't realize until after the fact. We fully recognize that although Cineform is a commonly used codec, H. On one side of the GoPro Max is a compartment door. But you're stuck with the view of whatever you were pointing the camera at while you record. This Agreement represents the complete understanding and agreement concerning the subject matter between the parties and supersedes all prior agreements, oral or written, between the parties, unless you and GoPro have executed a separate agreement. Setting up the GoPro Max for video Setting up the GoPro Max to shoot video is very simple, both in 360 and Hero video modes. The app also allows you to edit and share footage straight from your phone. By default, beneath the spanner you will see a small globe icon. It took the Hero 7's already-impressive feature, and ratcheted it up a few notches. Max HyperSmooth When I recently , one of the best updates was the new and improved HyperSmooth stabilization. I set one going at home, and walked around the camera going about my business. I'm less impressed by this 360-degree shot inside Grand Central Station. Even if you can mount it where you want, there's still a little extra work involved in wrangling the files if you want to punch something out of a 360-degree file. There are also some perks, so your specific needs will determine which outweighs the other. This shooting mode incorporates the on-camera horizon levelling to take a single 6. A few years ago, I went through a phase of taking panoramas but quickly stopped. The Max only has two options: off, or Max. On Max, it's even better again -- thanks to that extra buffering available to each 180-degree lens. The Hero 8's high-end frequencies can pop through a little more, but the Max delivers a much more robust recording overall with drum sounds popping through more and a wider sound stage, even if it does feel a little subdued this may also be due to camera placement. Let's be clear, GoPro isn't the first to do this -- cameras like the Insta360 line can do similar -- but it's impressive all the same and could be put to some very creative use. Or you can press and hold the Mode button on the camera itself. GoPro recently pushed significant updates to its editing studio. For the most part, it does a solid job, without many overlaps or other glitches. I can imagine plenty of folks more creative than me doing some really interesting things with this. Needless to say, it's a whole thing. This indicates the Max is in 360 mode. With Max, you can keep it locked right in front of you, or conversely pan around for effect. Max, with its improved stability, superior audio and all-seeing-eye s promised to be a GoPro that does things no other GoPro can. That said, there's undoubtedly a crowd to which the Max will definitely appeal. Conversely, if you're speaking to camera, you can have it home in on you. You will not delete or in any manner alter the copyright, trademark and other proprietary rights notices or markings appearing on the Software as delivered to you. With Max, SuperView shoehorns even more of the scene into your shot. Simply select your desired field of view and the GoPro app will automatically pan for a smooth video output. There are also audio settings that let you choose where the microphones will focus, and these have a more practical application. Depending on how you mount the camera the length of your selfie-stick, for example you may still see the odd quirk. Image stabilization has also been improved on the Max. Before we get to those, though, there are a few other hardware changes to point out. Max SuperView GoPro was vocally proud of SuperView when it first launched on. The camera itself is incredible which is a damn shame because the only option to generate usable footage is useless. You can also reframe 360-degree video and cut the clips to your liking. You shall not be entitled to any refund as a result of any termination of this Agreement. Here you might want to put the Max in its Hero video mode and change the mic preference to the front to pick up your voice better. Anecdotally, some people have told me about a similar problem with HyperSmooth on the Hero cameras, and it looks like it might have found its way over to Max, too. The Software is protected by United States copyright law and international treaties. Horizon leveling This was an underrated new feature on the Hero 8 -- the ability to correct footage that was a little lopsided say, if you'd mounted your camera leaning a little to one side. It will depend on how you use it, but expect similar usage times to the Hero 8 about an hour of active recording. The ability to record front, then back, superior stability and directional audio. I will say though, that the trade-off might be worth it. In 360 mode, all clips are stabilized by default aka, there's no option to turn it off. Max is one camera with two lenses. If your activity is fast, dynamic and preferably shot from your point of view, SuperView is a good choice. Though it's not without some quirks. We appreciate your feedback and patience as our team works diligently to enhance and improve our Windows Exporter. In the end, you have a slightly wonky image, with a in it. In theory, this gives your audio more presence in space, but in practice, it's hard to tell, especially if you're playing it back on a phone or laptop speakers. Where you might want to deviate, for instance, is if you were vlogging. With Max, you're stuck with 270 degrees. Basically you have either 1080p or 1440p 4:3 at 60, 30 or 24 frames per second, and that's your lot. With Max, GoPro has vastly improved the process compared to Fusion. I'm sure there is a reason it just doesn't feel well explained. In the demo we saw, GoPro was able to edit a 360-degree recording into an engaging action clip in mere minutes. Later, I was able to make something that almost looked like a multi-camera setup. So you're back to picking a speed manually and hoping it delivers. Tiny planet to extreme close up? Anyway, know that video, even in spherical mode, is adequately stabilized too. Users now have access to preset themes, single-clip editing and more filters. With shots on my face, the other side of the room, twisting up to the ceiling and then zooming back out down to me again. But the results I had were mixed. The Max has a lot of the new features seen on the Hero 8 Black, but GoPro is keen to point out that the Max pushes these a little further with even greater HyperSmooth digital stabilization, bigger 360-degree TimeWarp time lapse sequences and wider SuperView shooting formats. CineForm conversion straight up does not work. I had used it for a total of like 5 seconds before finding that bug. These are the video settings you can edit in both the GoPro Max 360 and Hero video modes. This is ideal for action or movement shots, or if you just want to avoid contributing to the dreaded caterpillar-dog meme. But this time around it's more of an advanced GoPro for creators that wanna get funky. Export your 360° videos as spherical. Either way, Max is a vast improvement over Fusion in every way, and finally makes a 360-degree camera feel less of a novelty, to the point where it's something you actually want to include in your workflow. At first it looks like vibration from my footsteps, but often it'll happen when I move the camera left to right etc. The thing to consider here is that your phone is designed for more conventional portrait and landscape photography i. On top of this, it's easy to mess things up by zooming out too much or trying to keep the horizon level. Get game changing horizon levelling. Here, you tell the camera to focus on audio from either the front lens, the back or both. Windows is a fragmented operating system that covers a myriad of home setups. You acknowledge and agree that portions of the Software, including, but not limited to, the source code and the specific design and structure of individual modules or programs, constitute or contain trade secrets of GoPro and its licensors. As a reminder, the Max is the spiritual successor to the Fusion but has many key differences. Horizon leveling is also much more capable than on the Hero 8. Rest assured, we are planning to add the same level of features for Windows as users with Mac currently get with the GoPro Player. As for 360-degree recording, the GoPro Max does an excellent job of stitching surroundings together right on the camera. At the top of the preview screen in the app, tap the spanner icon to access the Camera Preferences. The sound from the Hero 8 is much narrower and flatter but brighter. You can also apply horizon leveling at the time of capture, instead of after the fact in the app. The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods will not apply. While I can say right away that Max is a great improvement and it doubles as a regular GoPro, it's not for everyone and that's okay. You can literally rotate the camera through 360 degrees, several times, and your footage will stay locked on the Horizon if you so wish, of course. Choose from a range of resolutions 5. As mentioned earlier, one thing you won't need to do is stitch any files together. A new version of the GoPro Exporter has been released. You don't need to be a famous director to record a cool video with your phone or GoPro. The result is a speciality device that will appeal more to creatives than the average outdoor type. Thank you for your feedback on our GoPro Max Exporter. Where these stabilization features really come in handy is the TimeWarp functionality. For the Fusion this process had to be done using post processing software, but the Max now stitches the two hemispheres together and saves it as a single spherical video file. A new suite of on-camera processing removes the major pain-points from 360-video production, and integrates editing and reframing tools into the GoPro smartphone apps. But GoPro recommends investing in the if you want stick-free video every time. But hey, there's always Photoshop if you need to trim a little. For those that want to go the other way, who just want a 360-degree camera that might also double as a regular action cam, then Max makes a good choice. You might notice how stable the clip looks, too. Tap this bar, then tap the pencil icon to edit the settings. To round out the top-line features, the Max has a new six-microphone audio array that captures a truly three-dimensional soundscape. However, remember that doing so will erase the card so ensure you back everything up you want to keep. With Power Pano, simply grab it in one go like a regular photo. This combines with new on-camera horizon levelling to output video that is already stitched, stabilized and has a flat horizon from the moment it leaves the camera. You will have rubber caps to protect them when it's turned off, and there are protective plastic caps to keep them safe while in use, but there's possibly a small trade-off in clarity. The most immediate is automatic, on-camera stitching. Not a problem unique to Max, but a problem nonetheless. Let's just hope that the next generation eliminates the minor mounting issue. Needless to say, it's a solid feature and baked right into the menu this time. In fact, you can rotate the camera 360-degrees as you record, and the horizon won't move at all. If any provision of this Agreement is held to be unenforceable for any reason, such provision shall be enforced to the maximum extent possible and the other provisions will remain in full force and effect. Therefore, you might prefer the actual image you get from your phone, but with Max it's easier and better for grabbing action. Like its predecessor, the , the Max uses two 180-degree fisheye lenses to capture basically anything in its direct line of sight. The main limitation in Hero mode, compared to a regular GoPro, is that there are far fewer shooting modes. It's packed with colors and contrast, providing a bright render of my surroundings. But when you create a piece of junky software to go with it, the magic is lost. GoPro expressly reserves the right to freely assign this Agreement and to delegate any of its obligations hereunder. Often you need to jump into a different app and maybe even process the video stitching , which is never quick. It encourages you to think of it as a camera that catches everything, freeing you up to be a bit more in the moment. Accordingly, you agree not to reverse engineer, disassemble, decompile, or create any derivative work of the Software, in whole or part, or permit or authorize a third party to do so, except to the extent such activities are expressly permitted by law notwithstanding this prohibition. Please rest assured that we are working diligently to add support for these codecs in the near future. Unfortunately, the avant garde spirit of the Max can cut the other way at times, with parts of the app feeling far less polished than the Hero 8 Black and the occasional stitching issue in wider shots. The Max, however, stitches these two hemispherical video files together automatically, which is a massive timesaver, and the GoPro smartphone app has been updated to let you edit and publish spherical media from start to finish on your phone. In the audio player below, the music starts with the recording from the Max and then alternates between that and the Hero 8 every ten seconds. And there's something wacky happening where the images stitched beneath the camera. A clip I captured during rush hour inside Grand Central Station was available for immediate spherical playback on my phone. I initially thought it was an issue with the tightness of the mounting pin, but it happens even when you can't tighten it anymore. Likewise, you might want to use the Narrow 27mm lens option to make yourself bigger in the frame. But with the 360 format and Fusion in particular , you had to contend with stitching, where to hold or mount the camera, how to move with it and how to edit the whole mess afterward. You may make a single copy of the Software for backup purposes, provided that you reproduce on it all copyright and other proprietary notices that are on the original copy of the Software. I'm not particularly interested in 360-degree video, but I do like some of the creative tools it brings to regular videos. Also, perhaps the bigger problem is when each lens has to deal with different lighting. It was just too hit and miss and took too much time. For the latter, you'll dive into a setting under the Protune menu. Fusion was, fairly literally, two GoPros in one case. Most notably, the pared-down video options in Hero mode. I also noticed some jittering, particularly when filming stabilized footage in low light. When the Max was announced, GoPro repeatedly mentioned the camera's vlogging credentials. Although it's not quite the sort of feature you'd base a whole purchase on, it's definitely a nice perk. In many ways the GoPro Max is the perfect hybrid action and 360 camera to cover all of your needs, from vlogging to extreme sports.。 。 。 。 。 。 。
